ARTIS Zoo
Amsterdam’s historic zoo combines animals, mature planting and nineteenth-century buildings in the compact, leafy Plantage district near the old center.
Why go
ARTIS rewards visitors who notice the setting as well as the animals. Founded in 1838, it grew within a landscaped estate, and many monumental buildings still serve the zoo, giving the grounds the character of a scientific institution and city park combined.
What to look for
Historic animal houses and garden buildings are woven through the grounds.
The name ARTIS came from the middle word above the original three entrance gates.
An arboretum adds mature trees and botanical interest to the animal visit.
Useful to know
Allow enough time to move beyond the main animal enclosures and notice the historic buildings and planting.
Check the official plan before visiting if a particular indoor exhibit matters to you.
