Why go
The Jordaan shows how Amsterdam grew beyond its formal canal rings. Streets followed older ditches and paths, producing angled blocks, while carved trade signs, hofjes and the broad Rozengracht preserve layers of work, charity housing and later redevelopment inside the western center.
What to look for
- Stone tablets above doorways once identified residents’ trades with pictures rather than numbers.
- Restored hofjes hide small shared courtyards behind the street façades.
- Rozengracht is a filled-in canal that now cuts across the older street pattern.
Useful to know
- Build a walk between Noordermarkt and Westerkerk, then use side streets to explore the interior blocks.
- Assume hofjes are residential unless an entrance clearly indicates public access.
