Madurodam

Madurodam compresses Dutch landmarks, historic cities and major engineering works into a 1:25-scale park. The detail rewards slow comparison, while current access needs checking.

Madurodam

Why go

Visit to connect buildings scattered across the Netherlands in one visual survey. Moving bridges, factories and water displays turn national architecture and engineering into an active model, while the park's name opens a deeper story of war, remembrance and charity.

What to look for

  • Compare each 1:25 model with the scale of people and planted trees around it.
  • Trigger moving bridges, factories and water features where interactive controls are available.
  • Look for the park's three broad themes: water, historic cities and Dutch ideas.

The full story

Madurodam opened in 1952 as a miniature Dutch city built at a scale of 1:25. Its models reproduce recognizable buildings, historic townscapes and large infrastructure projects, allowing visitors to compare forms that are widely separated in the real country. The park is named for George Maduro, a Jewish law student from Curacao who fought the Nazi occupation and died in Dachau in 1945. His parents helped fund the project as a memorial, linking the playful city to a serious personal history. Teenaged Princess Beatrix became Madurodam's first mayor; a youth council from The Hague later continued that civic tradition. The models themselves demand close research. Builders study the shape, colour and details of each original before constructing the reduced version. Interactive elements add movement to the controlled scale: bridges operate, factories work and water becomes both obstacle and tool. Looking beyond the novelty reveals a park about how the Netherlands builds, governs and remembers.

Useful to know

  • Check the official site before travelling because current opening information was not confirmed.
  • Move slowly at model height; low viewpoints reveal street plans better than a quick overview.
  • Treat Madurodam as a Hague-area visit, not an Amsterdam city-centre attraction.
