Why go
The festival grew from Antalya’s mid-century cultural events into a film event associated with the Golden Orange name. For a cinema-focused visit, its appeal lies in seeing Turkish work and festival activity in the city that hosts it. The orange is a local emblem as well as the award’s identity, making the name part of Antalya’s cultural story.
The full story
Cultural performances in the Antalya area during the 1950s provided the setting from which the Golden Orange festival emerged. Avni Tolunay, who became mayor in 1963, helped turn those festivities toward cinema; the first Golden Orange Film Festival followed in 1964. The orange, strongly associated with the region, became the emblem and the name. Over later decades the event developed film competitions and an international dimension, while its organizers and programme structure changed. That history matters more to a visitor than an old list of juries or prize categories: Golden Orange is a way to encounter Antalya as a cultural city, not only as a beach base or a gateway to ruins. If a screening is central to your trip, use the current official programme for dates, venue and tickets rather than relying on a customary season.
