Cathedral of Our Lady
Antwerp’s Gothic cathedral pairs a soaring, single completed spire with major paintings by Rubens. Go inside for the art and spatial scale, or see its tower rise above the old town.
This is where Antwerp’s Gothic building ambition and its Baroque painting tradition meet. Rubens’s Descent from the Cross and Assumption of the Virgin Mary belong to the cathedral setting, while the unfinished second tower makes the long construction history visible from outside.
What to look for
Rubens’s Descent from the Cross is displayed in the cathedral.
The Assumption of the Virgin Mary connects painting to the church’s dedication.
Only one of the cathedral’s planned pair of towers reached full height.
Useful to know
See the spire from the surrounding streets before entering to understand the building’s scale.
Leave time to view the paintings individually; this is more than a quick interior stop.
