Papal Basilica of Saint Francis and the Sacred Convent
The Basilica of Saint Francis joins two painted churches and Francis’s tomb on Assisi’s hillside. Its contrasting levels reward a slower visit, with time for both the frescoes and the pilgrimage setting.
Start in the Lower Church, where painted chapels lead toward Francis’s tomb, then compare its darker vaults with the light and narrative frescoes of the Upper Church. Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti make the two levels a survey of early Italian painting. Each space has different visitor hours, so the visit rewards deliberate sequencing.
What to look for
Frescoes and the two-level basilica complex at the heart of Franciscan Assisi.
