Why go
Maungakiekie offers more space and archaeological detail than Auckland’s smaller central cones. Terraces, storage pits and defensive forms show the scale of the former pā, while the summit obelisk and grave of Sir John Logan Campbell add a later historical layer. Cornwall Park below turns the climb into a longer landscape visit.
What to look for
- Large terraces and earthworks remain visible across the cone’s flanks.
- The summit looks toward Manukau Harbour, Waitematā Harbour and the surrounding volcanic field.
Useful to know
- Use formed roads and paths to protect archaeological features; vehicle access does not reach the summit.
- Allow time for Cornwall Park or Stardome below instead of treating the cone as a standalone photo stop.
