Bullock Texas State History Museum
The Bullock gives Texas history a broad setting north of the Capitol, with the remains of La Belle providing a concrete starting point for exploration and encounter.
La Belle's surviving ship structure and recovered cargo turn French exploration into something you can examine rather than only read about. The museum places those objects within a larger account of Texas, including Spanish exploration and encounters with Indigenous peoples, making it a useful companion to the statehouse.
What to look for
La Belle's shipwreck remains and recovered cargo anchor the exploration story.
The museum opened on San Jacinto Day in 2001.
Its name honors former lieutenant governor Bob Bullock, who championed its creation.
Useful to know
Combine the museum with the Capitol a few blocks south to connect historical interpretation with the working statehouse.
