Bangkok Art and Culture Centre

A nine-level contemporary arts centre built around a circular atrium, with spaces for exhibitions, performance, film, design and cultural exchange.

Bangkok Art and Culture Centre

Why go

Come for a broad view of Bangkok’s contemporary creative scene rather than a single permanent collection. The circular interior makes the building itself part of the experience, while its mix of exhibition and performance spaces reflects the centre’s role as a meeting point for artists and audiences.

What to look for

  • The circular atrium links nine interior levels.
  • Exhibition and performance spaces span several art forms.
  • The civic arts project opened as Bangkok Art and Culture Centre in 2008.

The full story

Plans for a public contemporary art museum in Bangkok began under governor Bhichit Rattakul. Construction started in 2000, stopped amid funding and political difficulties, and resumed in 2005. The completed building opened in July 2008 under the name Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. Its nine floors curve around a central atrium, creating a continuous interior route rather than a sequence of isolated galleries. The centre was conceived as more than an exhibition hall: art, music, theatre, film, design and educational activity all have a place here. That breadth explains its value today. It provides a civic setting where Bangkok’s creative life can be encountered through changing programs, public gathering spaces and the architecture itself. Its inaugural exhibition featured photographs by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

Useful to know

  • Check the centre’s own channels for the current program and access details before visiting.
  • Allow time to move through several levels; the experience is distributed around the atrium.
  • Treat cafés, shops and other tenant spaces as separate from the centre’s exhibition program.
