Democracy Monument

A politically charged traffic-circle landmark whose four high wings and constitution shrine encode the 1932 end of Siam’s absolute monarchy.

Democracy Monument

Why go

The monument repays a short, focused look because almost every dimension carries political symbolism. It also marks the point where Ratchadamnoen’s royal boulevard became a stage for constitutional ideals, state power and later public protest. Its location also makes it a useful point from which to trace the avenue’s civic history.

What to look for

  • Find the representation of the 1932 constitution resting on two golden offering bowls.
  • Read the four 24-meter wings as symbols of the armed forces and the date 24 June.
  • Inspect the base reliefs by Corrado Feroci, later known in Thailand as Silpa Bhirasri.

The full story

Commissioned in 1939, Democracy Monument commemorates the 1932 revolution that replaced Siam’s absolute monarchy with a constitutional system. Architect Mew Aphaiwong designed the structure, while Italian-born sculptor Corrado Feroci created the reliefs around its base. Feroci later became a Thai citizen under the name Silpa Bhirasri and played a central role in the country’s modern art education. The monument turns dates and political claims into architecture. Four wing-like structures rise 24 meters and stand at a radius of 24 meters, referring to 24 June, the date of the revolution. At the center, a representation of the constitution rests on golden offering bowls above a turret. Even the turret’s height and original ring of cannon carried numerical references to the event. Its position on Ratchadamnoen is equally deliberate: a boulevard created for royal processions was recast as the ceremonial setting for a new political order.

Useful to know

  • View the monument from the surrounding pavements; it occupies a busy traffic circle.
  • Pair it with a walk along Ratchadamnoen Klang toward Sanam Luang.
  • Check local conditions before visiting because political gatherings can affect access and traffic.
