Why go

Few Bangkok sights place active worship so directly inside the commercial city. Each face of Phra Phrom looks toward a different direction, while eight hands carry symbolic objects and gestures. Flowers, incense and dance offerings make the shrine’s meaning visible in practice, even during a short pause between the surrounding malls.

The full story

The shrine was built in 1956 during construction of the government-owned Erawan Hotel. A sequence of delays and accidents led workers and project leaders to fear that the site had been disturbed at an inauspicious time. After consultation with an astrologer, a shrine to Brahma was commissioned to counter those influences. The Fine Arts Department designed the image, which was installed in November 1956. The hotel was later demolished and replaced, but the shrine remained and became more enduring than the building it was meant to protect. Its formal name is the Thao Maha Phrom Shrine. The central figure represents Brahma in Thai religious practice, with four faces directed toward the cardinal points and eight arms carrying objects such as a ritual vessel, mirror, scriptures and prayer beads. Resident dancers can be hired as an offering, turning answered prayers into public performance beside one of Bangkok’s busiest intersections.
