Wat Traimit and the Golden Buddha

A Chinatown temple complex centered on a five-and-a-half-tonne gold Buddha whose former plaster coating concealed its material value for generations.

Wat Traimit and the Golden Buddha

Why go

The temple’s central image combines refined Sukhothai-style form with an extraordinary survival story. Its serene posture, modular construction and preserved plaster fragments make the discovery understandable as more than a tale about precious metal. The image’s fitted sections and surviving coating fragments make its material history visible.

What to look for

  • Study the flame-like ushnisha, arched brows and balanced shoulders associated with Sukhothai style.
  • Look for surviving pieces of the plaster coating that once hid the gold.
  • Notice how the image was made in nine fitted sections that could be disassembled for transport.

The full story

The Golden Buddha, formally Phra Phuttha Maha Suwana Patimakon, weighs about five and a half tonnes. Its precise origin is uncertain, though its features are associated with the Sukhothai tradition. At some point the image was covered in stucco and colored glass, probably to hide its value. Still disguised, it moved between temples and reached Wat Traimit in the twentieth century. In 1955, workers attempted to lift it into a new building. The ropes broke, the statue fell, and part of the plaster chipped away to expose gold beneath. Conservators removed the remaining coating and discovered that the image consisted of nine fitted sections; a key in the base allowed it to be taken apart. Photographs and plaster fragments preserve evidence of that transformation. The story changes how the statue looks today: the shining surface is striking, but the humble outer shell explains how such an object could survive long periods of war, relocation and neglect.
