Why go
The tunnel changes the viewing angle: sharks, rays and other fish pass above and around visitors rather than behind a flat window. Its harbor location also makes it easy to combine with a Port Vell walk, though the aquarium deserves more than a quick glance.
What to look for
- Walk through the underwater tunnel beneath the ocean tank.
- Compare smaller marine habitats with the large shark and ray display.
The full story
The aquarium opened at Port Vell as part of the harbor’s shift toward public leisure space. Its most memorable feature is an ocean tank crossed by an underwater tunnel, changing a familiar aquarium view into a walk through the middle of the display. Sharks and rays can move overhead as well as alongside the visitor. The smaller tanks offer a more patient look at different marine habitats, with the Mediterranean as a useful thread through the visit. Moving between these displays gives the visit a shift in scale, from individual habitats to a broad ocean scene. Port Vell is a natural place to continue afterward, particularly if you have been exploring the Gothic Quarter or La Rambla and want to reach the water. This is an indoor activity, but the harbor approach and nearby promenade are exposed to weather.
Useful to know
- The guided tour lasts about 90 minutes. For a self-guided visit, leave time for the smaller habitat displays and ocean tunnel, and longer with children.
- Check the date-specific closing time before pairing the aquarium with another waterfront stop.
