Azkuna Zentroa
A former wine warehouse turned cultural centre, Azkuna Zentroa rewards a short architectural visit even if you have no event planned. Its column-filled atrium is the main draw.
Look up from the atrium to the transparent-bottom pool, then compare the 43 individually designed columns below it. The contrast between Ricardo Bastida's early twentieth-century warehouse and Philippe Starck's later conversion makes Bilbao's reuse of industrial buildings easy to see in one stop.
What to look for
The atrium rests on 43 columns with different designs.
A transparent-bottom pool is visible overhead from the atrium.
Useful to know
Start in the atrium if your interest is the building itself; check the centre's programme before planning an exhibition or performance.
