Basilica of Begoña
This Gothic sanctuary is tied to Bilbao's devotion to the Virgin of Begoña, known locally as the Amatxu. Go for the church's architecture and its place in city life.
The building began in the sixteenth century and took long enough to show a change in taste: Gothic structure meets a Renaissance portal. Its association with the Virgin of Begoña gives the architecture a living religious context, especially around the annual August and October celebrations.
What to look for
Compare the Gothic body of the church with the Renaissance influence at its main entrance.
The sanctuary is dedicated to the Virgin of Begoña, the Amatxu of local devotion.
