Portugalete
Portugalete combines a medieval town centre with the iron Puente Bizkaia at the mouth of Bilbao's estuary. Walk the old streets before crossing to Getxo if time allows.
The transporter bridge is the obvious landmark, yet the town behind it explains why this river mouth mattered. Portugalete competed with Bilbao as a port before trade privileges shifted toward the city. Its older streets, Salazar Tower and Basilica of Santa María make a compact walk with a different feel from Getxo across the water. The bridge can then turn the visit into a two-bank excursion.
