Why go
The square makes the city’s performance venues easier to understand as a group. Symphony Hall, the International Convention Centre and the Rep give different sides of the space their character. Its name also records Birmingham’s civic history: the square was named in 1989 to mark a century since the city gained city status.
What to look for
- Symphony Hall’s frontage faces the public square.
- Birmingham Rep forms another cultural anchor around the space.
Useful to know
- Combine the square with the canal area, checking the ICC Mall route if you plan to pass through the building.
- Choose individual theatre or hall visits separately from time spent crossing the outdoor square.
