Why go
The experience here is the sustained climb beneath hundreds of arches. Its changing gradient, chapel sequence and views make it a separate activity from merely entering the sanctuary at the top or seeing Porta Saragozza below. The portico gives some shelter, but the long walk remains physically demanding and exposed at its open sides.
What to look for
- At the Meloncello Arch, notice where the portico turns uphill toward San Luca.
- Follow the repeated arches as the arcade climbs toward San Luca.
- Notice how the sanctuary comes into view along the covered approach.
Useful to know
- The full portico begins at Porta Saragozza; the steeper covered ascent begins at Arco del Meloncello. Wear suitable shoes for the climb.
- Allow for the ascent and plan how to return from San Luca.
