Why go
The Valley offers a different city texture from the civic centre: pedestrian malls, older shopping buildings and streets associated with live entertainment. Walk Brunswick Street and Chinatown Mall to see the contrast, then choose any venue based on its own programme. The neighbourhood is useful as a flexible area, not a single timed attraction.
What to look for
- Brunswick Street Mall's pedestrian space.
- Chinatown Mall and its distinct streetscape.
- Older commercial buildings from the Valley's shopping era.
The full story
Fortitude Valley takes its name from the ship Fortitude, which brought Scottish immigrants to Brisbane in 1849. Some of those arrivals settled in the area after promised land grants did not materialise. The district grew into a major shopping centre as transport routes converged and businesses moved to higher ground after the severe floods of the 1890s. Rival retailers Thomas Beirne and James McWhirter helped turn Brunswick Street into a busy commercial address. Later shifts in retail and entertainment changed the area again, but the older shop buildings still tell part of that story. Walking between Brunswick Street Mall and Chinatown Mall gives a compact view of how the Valley has carried successive roles: immigrant settlement, retail centre and entertainment precinct.
Useful to know
- Use the two malls as clear anchors for a short neighbourhood walk.
- Check individual venue programmes if live music or nightlife is the reason for visiting.
