Why go
Come for an easy riverfront stop if you are already exploring Hamilton. The public plaza, shops and dining spaces make a relaxed contrast with Brisbane’s denser centre, while the river gives the precinct its strongest sense of place. Individual businesses determine what is open.
What to look for
- The public plaza opens towards the Brisbane River.
- Dining and retail spaces occupy the former cruise-terminal precinct.
The full story
Portside Wharf was developed beside the river in Hamilton around a cruise terminal opened in 2006. The older description of it as Brisbane’s international cruise gateway made sense for that period, but the city’s international terminal is now at Pinkenba. Today the visitor experience here is the waterfront precinct itself. Walk into the public plaza, look across the river and decide whether a meal, a film or a short browse suits the day. The river setting explains why this stretch attracted a terminal and later residential and retail development. It is a useful stop for seeing a different scale of Brisbane from the central business district, especially if your wider route already takes you through Hamilton. Treat individual shops and restaurants as separate choices, with their own current hours.
Useful to know
- Check the particular venue you want before making a dedicated trip.
- Keep cruise travel plans separate from this precinct; the current international terminal is at Pinkenba.
