Why go
The museum's collections connect landscapes, people and scientific discovery across Queensland. Its Discovery Centre and changing exhibitions can turn a broad museum visit into a more focused one. Because some special areas operate separately, check the current exhibition list and decide what matters most before entering.

The full story
Queensland Museum began in 1862 through the Queensland Philosophical Society and moved through several Brisbane homes before settling at South Bank in 1986. That long search for space reflects the growth of its collections and research. Its remit is wider than the capital: natural history, geology and cultural history bring the state's varied places and communities into one institution. In the South Bank cultural precinct, the museum sits close to art and performance venues, but its question is different. It asks how Queensland's environments and people have changed and how they are studied. Moving through the collections with that state-wide frame helps turn individual specimens and objects into a larger account of place. Its changing exhibitions offer another way into that broad story.
