Why go
This is a campus to explore through a named public venue, not a single exhibition. Its position near Parliament House and Old Government House links study, science and civic history within a short area. Decide which gallery or museum interests you before going.
What to look for
- Public arts venues and museums sit within the Gardens Point campus.
- The Science and Engineering Centre gives the campus a distinct science focus.
The full story
Gardens Point has carried several educational roles. Old Government House and its surrounding grounds were set aside for university and technical-college use in the early twentieth century, and the site later became part of Queensland University of Technology. That history is still legible in the campus’s position among the river, Parliament House and the Botanic Gardens. Today the public-facing reasons to visit are its arts venues, museums and Science and Engineering Centre. They are distinct destinations within a working university, each with its own program and access arrangements. Walk the area with one of those venues in mind, then use the nearby civic buildings to understand why this bend of the river became such an important institutional quarter. Do not use old enrolment figures or former campus lists to plan a visit.
Useful to know
