The Exchange

The Exchange brings Bristol's trading past into view on Corn Street. Its Palladian facade and brass merchant's tables outside are worth a short stop even when interior access is uncertain.

The Exchange

Why go

John Wood the Elder designed the eighteenth-century building for merchants, and the surviving brass 'nails' show how trade once reached the pavement. The frontage and clock make the commercial history legible from the street. The nearby market setting adds context without requiring entry to the Exchange itself.

What to look for

  • Four brass trading 'nails' stand outside on Corn Street.
  • The Palladian frontage gives the former exchange a formal face.
  • A clock above the frontage recalls the city's trading routines.

Useful to know

  • Start outside with the brass nails before looking up at the facade.
  • Check current access if you want to enter the building.
  • Combine the stop with Corn Street and nearby St Nicholas Market.
