Church of Our Lady

This tall brick church pairs Michelangelo’s marble Madonna with Burgundian tombs, though its principal artworks sit inside a ticketed museum section.

Church of Our Lady

Why go

Few Bruges interiors combine an internationally known sculpture with such direct Burgundian history. Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child occupies a side chapel, while the choir holds the full-length effigies of Mary of Burgundy and Charles the Bold beneath the church’s soaring brick tower.

What to look for

  • Michelangelo’s white-marble Madonna and Child stands in the large southern-aisle chapel.
  • Mary of Burgundy and Charles the Bold lie beneath gilded bronze effigies on dark stone slabs.
  • The thirteenth-century brick tower dominates the surrounding streets well before the entrance.

The full story

Most of the Church of Our Lady dates from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries, when Bruges was closely tied to the Burgundian court and European trade. That history is unusually tangible in the choir. Mary of Burgundy and her father, Charles the Bold, appear in full-length gilded bronze effigies, with Charles shown in armour and wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece. The church’s best-known artwork arrived through commerce rather than royal patronage. Bruges merchants Jan and Alexander Mouscron bought Michelangelo’s marble Madonna and Child in Italy and donated it here in 1514. The sculpture was later removed twice by occupying forces, first during the French Revolutionary period and again in 1944, and returned after both episodes. Its survival makes the chapel a compact link between Renaissance art, Bruges’ merchant wealth and the disruptions that shaped the city’s collections.

Useful to know

  • Allow for two access zones: the church is free, while the Madonna and ducal tombs are in the ticketed museum.
  • Look up at the tower from the surrounding streets before entering; its height is difficult to read from the doorway.
  • Check the museum timetable rather than assuming that church access includes the art section.
