Giza Plateau
The plateau west of Cairo holds the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the Sphinx and their surrounding tombs. Allow time to see the complex, not just one pyramid.
Why go
The three royal pyramids make more sense together: subsidiary pyramids, tombs, temples and causeways reveal a planned burial landscape. Walk between the major monuments to compare their scale and positions, then look east toward the Sphinx. The open plateau calls for a deliberate route and protection from the sun.
What to look for
Compare the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure across the plateau.
Look for smaller subsidiary pyramids and mastaba tombs near the royal monuments.
Trace how temples and causeways connected the pyramid complexes.
Useful to know
Plan a route across the plateau before focusing on individual monuments; the site covers much more than one pyramid.
Check the official site information for gate and monument access before setting out.
