Fairmont Palliser
This 1914 railway hotel stands beside Calgary Tower on 9 Avenue SW. Its grand exterior adds an early twentieth-century counterpoint to the surrounding office towers.
The Palliser makes sense as an architectural pause while walking between Calgary Tower and the railway corridor. Built for the Canadian Pacific Railway and named for explorer John Palliser, it shows how the arrival era of rail travel shaped Calgary's downtown image.
