Why go
This Battambang countryside route combines an Angkorian hill temple, the locally rebuilt bamboo train and the more sombre caves of Phnom Sampeau. Hire a driver for the cross-country leg, then walk the short link between the Banan temple and the mapped Banan train station. The climb at Banan and the paths at Sampeau call for steady footing, water and unhurried stops. Visit Sampeau’s memorial spaces respectfully and plan to leave the hill while there is still daylight; the evening bat spectacle is a separate outing. Check that the bamboo train is operating locally before making it the day’s fixed appointment.
