Why go
Understanding the road pattern helps when choosing an address, reading a map or planning a transfer. The Hotel Zone follows a long coastal corridor, while downtown streets turn inward within large blocks. A destination that looks close across Nichupté Lagoon may require a journey around it.
The full story
Boulevard Kukulcán follows the Hotel Zone between the Caribbean Sea and Nichupté Lagoon. Its roughly seven-shaped course is the main organizing line for hotels and beaches. At the mainland end, Avenida Cobá connects the corridor with downtown and crosses Avenida Tulum, a major north–south avenue. Avenida Bonampak runs roughly parallel to Tulum farther east. Much of central Cancún was planned in supermanzanas, or superblocks. Main roads outline large areas, while smaller residential streets curve inward or end in cul-de-sacs. Parks and other shared spaces occupy some of their interiors. A straight line across a map therefore does not always correspond to a through street. Paseo José López Portillo is another useful northern reference, with connections toward Puerto Juárez and routes west. Puerto Juárez is the mainland departure area for ferries to Isla Mujeres. For any hotel or attraction, locate the exact address and its approach road before judging the journey from the neighborhood name alone.
Useful to know
- Locate a Hotel Zone address along Boulevard Kukulcán before estimating its distance from downtown.
- Follow mapped streets through downtown superblocks; residential roads may end inside them.
