The full story

El Rey is a compact Maya archaeological site near Playa Delfines, where plazas and a central route make the settlement’s layout easy to follow.

The relationship between the two plazas, columned buildings and stone platforms is the main reward here. They give a clear impression of an organised ceremonial and administrative centre within today’s resort strip. Its small scale also makes El Rey a manageable introduction before committing to a longer regional ruins excursion.

  • A central route linking two plazas
  • Stone platforms and surviving columned buildings

Pair the ruins with Playa Delfines as two nearby stops.

Allow for exposed walking and stay on the visitor route.
