Akumal
Akumal is a coastal community associated with sea turtles and shallow marine habitat. Visit with conservation in mind, rather than expecting unrestricted swimming or guaranteed wildlife encounters.
Akumal developed as a diving community after its foundation in 1958. That connection to the water now sits alongside marine conservation: regulated turtle-viewing corridors aim to reduce disturbance to wildlife. Understanding the bay as protected habitat gives a visit more purpose than simply seeking a sighting.
What to look for
Seagrass beds provide feeding and resting habitat for sea turtles.
Akumal Bay and Half Moon Bay shape the community’s shoreline.
Useful to know
Confirm current turtle-viewing permissions and beach entry arrangements before choosing an activity.
Between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, Akumal can be considered alongside either town when planning coastal travel.
