Ek’ Balam Archaeological Zone
Ek’ Balam is a Maya archaeological city north of Valladolid, where the monumental Acropolis and its elaborate decoration give the visit a distinctive architectural focus.
The contrast between the Acropolis’s overall scale and its finely modeled façade is the central reward. Looking at both brings the building’s royal and ceremonial roles into view, rather than treating it simply as a large pyramid. The site also offers a useful comparison with the different architectural emphasis of Chichén Itzá.
