Tulum archaeological zone
Tulum combines a compact Maya coastal city with a cliff-top Caribbean setting. Visit for the relationship between its surviving buildings, defensive wall and former trading role.
The East Coast architectural style gives close looking a clear focus: small temples, flat roofs supported by columns and descending-god figures in stucco. The settlement’s late history also makes it a useful contrast to the earlier inland cities of the peninsula.
What to look for
El Castillo stands above the Caribbean on the coastal cliffs.
The Temple of the Wind occupies another prominent position facing the sea.
Useful to know
Plan the journey to the archaeological zone rather than the center of modern Tulum.
Read the enclosing wall as part of the site, alongside the better-known seafront temples.
