From the regional World / Areas

Carcassonne: Cité and Lower Town

Carcassonne spreads across the fortified Cité, the lower Bastide Saint-Louis and the Aude between them. Use those three parts to plan a walk rather than treating the fortress as the whole city.

Carcassonne: Cité and Lower Town

Why go

The high Cité supplies the walls, gates and Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus; the lower bastide has its regular streets and Carcassonne Cathedral. Pont Vieux and the Aude connect the two sides. The Canal du Midi and Lac de la Cavayère offer different outdoor choices beyond the fortress circuit.

What to look for

  • The walled Cité above the Aude
  • The gridded Bastide Saint-Louis around Place Carnot
  • Pont Vieux linking the river crossing to the old town

Useful to know

  • Plan the Cité and bastide as separate walking areas, with the Aude crossing between them.
  • Treat Lac de la Cavayère as a separate outing rather than an extra stop within the historic core.
