The full story
Pause at the Cité’s eastern entrance to examine its paired gate towers and layered defenses before entering the old town.
Porte Narbonnaise is the Cité’s eastern gateway and a strong place to begin reading its defenses. The paired towers, gate passage and portcullis features described by the Ministry of Culture belong to a carefully designed entrance, rather than scenery around a street. Comparing the narrow passage with the imposing towers makes the gateway’s defensive purpose easier to see.
- Twin entrance towers
- Medieval gate passage
- Fortification details visible from the public approach
The public Cité entrance is free and accessible day and night; paid castle and rampart visits are separate.
