Why go
Use this route to understand Carcassonne through its waterways and crossings before entering the fortress. Start at the canal port, pass Square Gambetta and cross the Aude on Pont Vieux, where the Cité comes into view. The small Notre-Dame-de-l’Abbaye Treasury Museum is an optional detour only if you have confirmed its admission; outside summer it requires advance contact. Continue uphill to Porte d’Aude, then give the Château Comtal and ramparts a longer visit. This is a walking day with a sustained climb near the end, so keep the museum optional if you prefer a slower castle visit. Check castle admission and opening times separately.
