Why go
A simple sequence prevents the fortified city from becoming one long wall walk. Enter by a gate, look at the street pattern and basilica, and consider the separate castle visit only if you want its interior and ramparts. Pont Vieux, the bastide and canal can shape the rest of the day.
The full story
The public streets of the Cité can be explored as their own visit. Use Porte Narbonnaise or Porte d’Aude to read the walls before moving inside, where the Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus changes the pace from open-air stonework to nave, choir and glass. Château Comtal and the inner ramparts are a distinct, ticketed attraction; decide on them rather than assuming they are part of a street walk. For a second perspective, cross the Aude toward Bastide Saint-Louis and look back at the hilltop fortifications. The Canal du Midi near Carcassonne’s station offers a different kind of historic engineering. Boats and events may be available, but check current arrangements instead of building the day around an unverified departure or performance.
Useful to know
- Visit the public Cité streets before deciding on the separate castle circuit.
- Use the Aude crossing for a view back toward the walls, then choose a lower-town or canal stop.
