Cardiff City Hall

City Hall’s Portland-stone exterior and tall clock tower are key features of Cathays Park; plan an architectural look from outside rather than assuming interior entry.

Why go

The building captures Cardiff’s early ambitions as a city. Its Edwardian Baroque design rewards a look alongside the neighbouring law courts, which were planned in the same competition. The clock tower and sculpted façade make the exterior worthwhile even when a visit to the ceremonial rooms is unavailable.

What to look for

  • The clock tower rises 59 metres above the civic centre.
  • Portland stone gives the elaborate façade a pale finish.
  • Sculptural groups represent Music and Poetry, and Unity and Patriotism.

The full story

Cardiff’s fifth town hall was designed before it could properly be called City Hall. The architectural competition was held in 1897, and construction was underway when Cardiff received its city charter in 1905. The building opened in 1906, giving the new city a suitably monumental civic address. Lanchester, Stewart and Rickards designed both this building and the adjoining law courts, which explains their closely related treatment of stone and sculptural detail. Inside, the later Marble Hall brought figures from Welsh history into the ceremonial setting; it was unveiled in 1916. That interior history helps explain the building’s national symbolism, but an exterior visit should focus on what is visible: the tower, portico and sculpted groups that announce civic authority across the park.

Useful to know

  • Observe from public areas and follow any signs around building works.
  • Combine the exterior with the surrounding civic gardens and museum.
