Fuerte de San Fernando de Bocachica
San Fernando guards the Bocachica entrance from Tierra Bomba with a parade ground, principal bastions and channel-facing batteries. It is a substantial fort reached by boat from Cartagena.
Why go
San Fernando is the largest surviving fort at the narrow Bocachica entrance to Cartagena Bay. Its parade ground, two principal bastions and lateral batteries make the channel defense legible on foot. Combine it with the nearby battery of Ángel San Rafael if your island route allows, and account for the boat crossing before planning time inside the fort.
What to look for
Parade ground and the King's and Queen's bastions
Batteries aimed toward the Bocachica channel
Sea approach to the fort on Tierra Bomba
Useful to know
Fort admission is free. Take a boat from La Bodeguita to Bocachica and pay the boat fare and port departure tax separately.
