Why go
This route suits visitors drawn to ancient remains and the layers of the western historic centre. Begin in Casa Museo Giovanni Verga, then make one combined visit to the Roman Theatre of Catania and smaller Odeon: they share the entrance and ticket, so allow time for both before moving on. The nearby Rotonda baths and university archaeology collection keep the Roman thread in view. Finish at the Benedictine monastery, where later architecture and the traces of lava and earthquake change the scale of the day. The monastery and theatre are the longer visits; if their tours or entry times do not line up, omit the optional archaeology museum rather than rushing either one.

Main stop · 25–45 min
Casa Museo Giovanni Verga
Giovanni Verga’s former home displays manuscripts and personal objects in domestic rooms. A visit of about 45 minutes connects the writer’s work with a place where he lived, rather than a general literary exhibition.

Roman Theatre of Catania
Behind the modern street frontage, the Roman Theatre opens onto a broad ancient cavea, vaulted passages and layers of the earlier Greek site. Allow about an hour inside.

03Main stop · 15–20 min
Roman Odeon
The smaller Roman Odeon sits just west of the Theatre inside the same archaeological complex. Its scale makes a useful comparison during the shared visit.

Terme della Rotonda
Terme della Rotonda preserves a circular Roman bath later adapted into a church. The change of use makes one small site a clear example of Catania’s layered history; check access before planning an interior visit.

05Optional · 35–60 min
Museo di Archeologia dell’Università di Catania
The university archaeology museum covers material from prehistory through late antiquity. It gives Catania’s visible Roman sites a wider historical frame; check university visiting arrangements before setting aside an hour for the collection.

06Main stop · 50–90 min
Monastero dei Benedettini
The Benedictine monastery’s cloisters and layered buildings record changes after the 1669 lava flow and 1693 earthquake. Set aside a longer visit, ideally guided, to understand the vast complex beyond its street exterior.

07Optional · 20–35 min
Chiesa di San Nicolò l’Arena
On Piazza Dante, the enormous unfinished San Nicolò l’Arena shows the scale of Catania’s Benedictine complex. Allow time for the church itself; the neighbouring monastery tour covers a different part of the site.
