The Fireproof Building
Visit a Robert Mills building designed to protect public records from fire, now home to the South Carolina Historical Society Museum. Its architecture and exhibits work well together on a central Charleston walk.
Why go
Completed in 1827, the building makes an early practical idea visible in stone, brick and restrained classical design. Its arcaded base, porticoes and interior stair hall explain the purpose behind the name, while the museum adds a wider account of South Carolina's history.
