The full story
Union Station places travelers just west of the Loop, within walking distance of some downtown hotels but not directly on the 'L'. After leaving the platform, follow signs for the correct street exit before opening navigation; emerging on the wrong side of the large complex can add an awkward loop with luggage. City buses, taxis and rideshares provide onward connections, while several rail stations are reachable on foot for travelers carrying little. The Great Hall is worth seeing when open, but keep the visit secondary to finding your departure area. For outbound travel, arrive with enough time to identify the concourse and boarding process, since track announcements may occur close to departure. Check the operator's current baggage and boarding guidance. If transferring to a suburban commuter service, confirm the exact downtown terminal because Chicago has several separate rail stations.
