The full story
Anish Kapoor's mirrored sculpture bends Chicago's skyline and visitors into a seamless silver form that rewards looking from every side and underneath.
Cloud Gate earns more than a quick photograph because its reflections reorganize the city around you. Walking beneath the central arch reveals a dense, repeating image that feels entirely different from the broad skyline views outside. Changes in light constantly remake the surface.
- Circle the sculpture to watch the skyline stretch, invert and disappear across its curved surface.
- Stand beneath the omphalos, where reflections multiply into an abstract canopy.
Early morning usually makes it easier to study the surface and frame photographs.
The sculpture is outdoors and free; combine it with Crown Fountain and the Pritzker Pavilion.
