Why go
Come for works you already recognize, then use the museum’s breadth to make one deeper choice. The Impressionist rooms, Chicago Stock Exchange Trading Room and Modern Wing each support a different visit. The collection is too large for a complete sweep, so two or three anchors make the experience clearer and less tiring.
What to look for
- Georges Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte and a deep Impressionist collection
- American Gothic, Nighthawks and other works closely tied to U.S. visual culture
- Renzo Piano’s Modern Wing and the preserved Chicago Stock Exchange Trading Room
Useful to know
- Choose two collection areas before arrival; crossing the whole museum adds substantial walking.
- Use the Modern Wing entrance when combining the museum with Millennium Park.
- Check the official calendar for current hours, gallery closures and timed exhibitions.
