University of Chicago
A Gothic and modern campus in Hyde Park where collegiate quadrangles, major academic architecture and cultural institutions form a rewarding self-guided walk.
Why go
The campus offers a quieter architectural counterpoint to downtown Chicago. Its limestone quadrangles create deliberate medieval atmosphere, while later buildings reveal how successive architects challenged and extended that visual language. Walking between them turns architectural history into a direct comparison of ideas and materials.
What to look for
Walk the Main Quadrangles to see gateways, cloisters and courtyards unfold in sequence.
Compare the Gothic core with modern works such as Rockefeller Memorial Chapel's surroundings and newer campus buildings.
Useful to know
Respect academic activity and posted access rules; many interiors are working university spaces.
Combine the campus with Robie House, but reserve separately if you want a house tour.
