Why go
Jens Jensen treated the conservatory as a sequence of landscapes rather than a row of display cases. Fern Room rockwork, the Palm House canopy and changing seasonal rooms create distinct scales and climates. It is especially rewarding on a cold or wet day, when the contrast between the glasshouse environments and the city outside feels most pronounced.
What to look for
- The Palm House canopy and central pond beneath the historic glass structure
- Fern Room stonework designed to suggest a prehistoric Illinois landscape
- Desert House forms and seasonal displays that change the route through the complex
Useful to know
- Reserve a timed entry even though walk-ins may be accepted when capacity allows.
- The Conservatory-Central Park Drive Green Line station is immediately beside the grounds.
- Check whether the Children’s Garden needs its own reservation before bringing young children.
