Griffin Museum of Science and Industry

A hands-on science museum in the 1893 Palace of Fine Arts, built for long visits around engineering, transport, weather and human-scale experiments.

Griffin Museum of Science and Industry

Why go

The museum works best when you mix one large object with interactive galleries. The captured German submarine U-505, the Pioneer Zephyr train and the restored Coal Mine turn technical history into physical scale. Many experiences require separate timed tickets, so a good visit starts with one booked anchor and leaves room for open-ended exploration.

What to look for

  • The U-505 submarine and its purpose-built underground display hall
  • The Pioneer Zephyr streamliner and exhibits on transport and industrial design
  • The restored Coal Mine, a ticketed guided experience reached inside the museum

Useful to know

  • Allow at least three hours; the building and exhibition floors are much larger than they first appear.
  • Book any timed U-505, Coal Mine or Giant Dome experience before filling the rest of the day.
  • Combine it with Jackson Park rather than Museum Campus; the sites are several miles apart.
