Why go
The Venus emblems give this platform an identifiable theme among the low monuments of the Great Plaza. Its four-sided stair arrangement can be read from the surrounding path. Compare it with the similar but geographically separate Venus platform in the Osario group if you continue south.
What to look for
- Four stairways rise to the low platform
- Half-star carvings stand for Venus
The full story
The platform is a square masonry block with a central stairway on each of its four sides. Raised and recessed panels hold low reliefs, including a bird-human figure seen from the front and the sign of Venus. A year-bearer sign appears above a bundle of rods, suggesting a calendrical association, though the precise function is interpretive. Sculpted serpent heads flank the stairways; their bodies form a band around the platform’s upper edge. A monument with a nearly identical image program stands east of the Osario. The close comparison helps identify recurring symbols across the city, while the neighboring Platform of the Eagles and Jaguars shows how a similar architectural form could carry different imagery. The repeated design is a useful clue to how images traveled between architectural groups, even when the meaning of each motif remains open to interpretation.
