Why go
This compact Shanghai route suits travelers who want to compare the city’s riverfront with a smaller historic quarter. Begin on the Bund, where the Huangpu River and the long line of facades set the urban scale. Walk south to Yu Garden, Shanghai and allow enough time for its ponds, rockeries and pavilions. City God Temple of Shanghai is a separate final stop beside the garden, with halls and an entrance court that shift the focus from designed landscape to religious architecture. The two later sites are very close, so most of the effort lies in the riverfront walk. Check each site’s current access arrangements before planning the order.
