Beijing
Beijing joins imperial precincts with lived-in older streets. Build a day around one major site such as the Forbidden City or Temple of Heaven, then leave room for the surrounding hutongs.
The city’s long role as a capital is legible at different scales: ceremonial halls in the Forbidden City, the planned landscape of the Temple of Heaven and the smaller courtyard pattern of the hutongs. Seeing one large complex and one neighborhood gives a clearer picture than rushing between distant monuments.
What to look for
Compare palace courtyards at the Forbidden City with the Temple of Heaven’s ceremonial plan.
Notice how hutong lanes and courtyard houses change the scale of the city.
Useful to know
Give the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven separate time blocks; each is a substantial site.
Check the chosen monument’s current entry rules before building the rest of the day around it.
