Palace Museum (Forbidden City)
Walk through the former Ming and Qing imperial palace in central Beijing. Its sequence of gates, courts and halls makes the scale of court life tangible.
The palace places imperial ceremony and daily administration inside one vast walled complex. Moving from the outer courts toward smaller inner spaces reveals a change in scale that a single landmark photograph misses. Give its halls and courtyards substantial time, and distinguish the main museum visit from any separately managed display.
What to look for
Follow the succession of gates and open courts.
Compare the monumental ceremonial halls with smaller inner courtyards.
Look for the timber construction and roof details across the palace buildings.
Useful to know
Set aside a substantial block of the day for the large palace complex.
Check the museum's current admission calendar and any separate gallery access before travel.
